I have been told the 450 will go anywhere the 660 will. The 660 is slightly quicker in acceleration and top speed. But if I am not looking at those advantages and just wanted to buy a rhino based on the better engine from an engineering standpoint which motor is better? I am not sure which model to go with 450 SE or 660 SE?

Thanks for the input!

If your not interested in more power, quicker acceleration and higher top speed then by all means get the 420 (450) to save a few bucks. They both do a great job at anything you might want to use a SideXSide for. But don't buy a 420 because you believe it's somehow more reliable than the 660 because that simply is not the case.

You read about 660 owners with engine issues simply because of the numbers and how they are used, they have sold at about a 7 to 1 ratio over the last 2 years and there were 2 years of 660's only before that so it's simple math. Add the fact almost all 420 owners leave them 100% stock and don't flog them like a 660 then you begin to see the real reasons. Many 660 owners make extensive modifications to their machines and when they screw something up it's "Yamaha sucks" instead of "maybe I should not have done my first ever valve adjustment on a $10,000 machine with no service manual in the dark" or "maybe those 29.5" tires were to big".

The difference between two is the 420 engine is 239cc's smaller, has one less intake valve and produces about 20% less power than the 660. I would buy one if it better suited my needs than my 660 does.

Happy trails.

if you plan on just getting one to putt around in then yes go with the 450, but if your gonna end up doing aftermarket mods for a little more power ect...then just go ahead and fork out alittle more for the 660. I run the piss out of my 660 at glamis and have never had any problems.

I have a 450 and it has been great, now if I lived near were there were dunes a 660 may do the trick, however my father in law has a stock 660 and I can go absolutely anywere he can go. His stock is also maybe a couple of miles per hour faster and that's about it. He actually always asked why he spent the extra money. The 450 is also geared down 18% lower to make up for it's lack of displacement, so believe me it will hold it's own, People are very surprised to see how well it really does.

I believe it is just what the buyer wants. If they think the 450 will do anything they want it to do then get the 450. I got the 660 have no problems with it at all (knock on wood). But I have also heard good things about the 450 to, just depends

I have owned both.07 450 and now 07 660 Yes, in certain conditions the 420 will do whatever the 660 will. I put 440 trouble free miles on the 450 in six months with no problems. But on the occasion my buddy and I would get on a straight................his 660 would reel me in. For me, I knew I had made a mistake when I bought the 450 ,so six-months later at about a 2500 dollar loss, I got rid of it and got the 660 . If you are the least-bit performance minded-get the 660 or 700.

I agree the trails is were it will shine the wide open areas not so much, it depends on your terrain, like I said dunes definetly 660, and actually I would go with the 700, I have the grizzly 700 and it's an awesome motor, I feel that this new 700 is a very reliable engine!

Nobody really answered your question. Ive only had my rhino for a week, but I wouldnt imagine the engines being any less reliable than each other. There probably close to the same. However, I think it would depend on where your riding.

It just boils down to this, do you really need the power for working, if not the 450 will go everywhere. Plus theres probably a chip for it.

Personally, I always go big, 700 here!

Really? Nobody mention how the engines compare to one another? Maybe you should read post #2 again. :hitwithrock:

Four of us on my street have Rhinos, 3) 450's and 1) 660's. None of us have had a problem with our machines. We all can climb the mountains areas where we ride just fine. I do notice a little more wheel spin on the 660 when we are climbing. The 660 is quicker on flat pavement, but with that said, our average trip speeds are usually less the then 10 mph(you can't climb a mountain at 40mph). I tend to agree with prowrench people make modification and push the limits on the 660 more. My mechanic says he sees more 660's then 450's (4 to 1)in his shop for repair, but it usually to fix their mistakes. 80% of the rhino's he does mod's on are 660's too.

Thank you all for your input!!!! I did end up going with the 450. I got it brand new for almost $1000 less than MSRP. I have had it for a little over a year now. It has taken me through some serious mud and has kept up with a modified 660 on the trail, I think mostly due to lower gearing and because it is hard to go over 25 mph on the trail (or you'll go off a cliff) I don't even plan on modifying the engine since it does what I expect it to.

i have heard good about both... but since i am a bit of a lead foot I chose the 660 (plus extra weight for the 4 seater roll cage... I think it really comes down to what your prefer
