Hi, I have had a RT-40 (warn) winch for about 2 years, and I love it. The only problem that i have been having, is it does not pull up full power when the engine is started. I use it to lift a plow, and just replaced the plow blade, so it weighs a lot more than before. It raises up with ease (full power) when the key is turned on/off but the engine is not started. But when the engine is started, it raises in baby steps. Almost like it is a pulse with 2 second intervals. I did not install the winch, but i have some photo's. I am not sure why the winch goes through the second relay before just a hardline connection to the battery, look at my pictures and please help. Thanks!

I have searched the internet all over, no other problems like it please reply quick, huge snow storm is coming and i need to remove snow for my business

I would try hooking you power and ground the main wires to the winch to the battery posts not to that relay or whatever that is. And i have my 2 lil red wires hooked to the power in the cig lighter with a conector. Give that a try and see how that works mabey??

Thanks, just rewired straight to the battery and no issues. I think the second relay that it went through was making the winch run off pure alternator only power when the engine was running. Now no problems, and I just hope that it doesn't burn out my battery! :)

Ohh just re-read your post, the two red wires were just clamped between the relay post and the bolt. They were frayed, but i did not know what they went to so i just put them back. Do you have any Idea what those lead to, i dont want to damage them.

Those 2 small wires that were just crimped to the battery post under those other wires were your power wires to the relays I would guess, which if they weren't making good contact would cause the relay to trip and reset with the power surge of the winch (A winch requires high amps) so it was triggering the relays open/close circuit which was causing the winch to start and stop. Once you disconnected and reconnected everything giving a better connection it started letting the higher amp draw through. You could hook those back up to the battery like they were and through the relays if you want just use ring terminals large enough for the bolt for the battery cables will pass through which will give you a more solid connection rather than just stuck between a few other wire connections.

Glad its working for you though, winches are very useful and the most common way to operate a plow, so when the snow hits and the plow/winch aren't working it sucks.

just for clarification:

The cables that came from the first relay (manufactured by warn) were going to a second relay (no idea what it is), so i just wired them straight from the warn relay to the battery post, While I was dissconecting the second relay to put the wire straight to the battery, 2 red wires were wrapped around and in between the post, wedged by the battery. i just left those reconnected to the second relay, i was just wandering what they went to, if anyone knew.

They are so you have a keyed switch for the power of the winch. Hooking them up to the batt is fine the winch will just have power all the time. Hooking them to the cig lighter like i have mine will only allow the winch to work when the key is on. I have kids and drunk friends that like to push buttons so thats why i dident want power to it all the time. Hope that make sense.

I don't think I'd want the winch having power unless the Rhino was running, however they're wired so that when the ignition is on they receive power. I don't think I would want to run the winch too long without the engine running unless there's a 2nd battery installed that the winch is connected to.
