Timing chain tensioner

hey guys i searched already and couldnt find anything but i need a lil help. I pulled my timing chain tensioner to change the gasket on it cuz it was torn and when i try to put it back were it goes it is too long like it wont depress at all so i can put the bolts back in it. i messed around with that little set screw to see if i could back it off to depress it but i am worried about screwin sumthing up any help would look greatly appreciated. thanks guys

a. Lightly press the timing chain tensioner rod
into the timing chain tensioner housing by
hand.
NOTE:
While pressing the timing chain tensioner rod,
wind it clockwise with a thin screwdriver 1
until it stops.
Removing the screwdriver and slowly
release the timing chain tensioner rod.
c. Make sure that the timing chain tensioner
rod comes out of the timing chain tensioner
housing smoothly. If there is rough movement,
replace the timing chain tensioner.

this is what the book says to do.
