I don't live in the san Fernando area, but I do run my SR1 in the desert on the CA side of the river near Parker, AZ, and as long as you think ahead a little, it has yet to be a problem.

Worse case, put a cheap little ATV winch on the front, or ride with a friend.

I have raced several desert races and have a several dune seasons under my belt without having or needing reverse. Haven't needed it yet.....in the dunes, I don't usually go out alone anyway - for the desert races, we just never got ourselves into a position where we needed to back up.

I don't think it is a necessity, but I have reverse and would not go without it. It is way too convenient and I don't have to think ahead about how I park. Plus I can drive it out of the toyhauler without having push it out.
