2007 Rhino 450 long story short: the steering linkage stripped out the gear on top of the rack and pinion.

I have a used steering gear assy, steering linkage and NIB rack and pinion. Could one of you gear heads please give me step by step how to uninstall (properly or at least without damage) the existing. The used portions of the replacement parts are in great condition and I even have new set bolts for the upper and lower linkage fasteners. The rack and pinion looks like fun to replace. Lots of parts. Thank you in advance and please dumb it down. I learn from experience, I try to make them successful good experiences lol. Peace.

I've never opened the rack itself, but I have unbolted and replaced the unit as a whole. Removed the tie rod ends at either end and unbolt the rack from the frame.

After you pull the boot back (and remove the outer from the spindle) the inners will un-screw from the rack. Get on Babbits (or anywhere else that shows the parts break down) , and you will see how it all goes together...you should also be able to find the service manual on here and download it.
If you are referring to replacing the whole steering assembly,

Remove the original tierod ends,

Then remove the upper and lower 8-10mm (can't remember) bolts that pinch the linkage to the splined ends

I will also remove the 12mm that hold the steering wheel portion to give me some wiggle room

Lastly I would remove the 4 12mm that hold the steering rack itself

I also remove the radiator reservoir and move it to the side and that's where I fish out the steering rack

If it's an oem rack going in, there are hand painted lines to help you center the steering and rack so that your "lock to lock" is centered and you don't lose some turning ability by not centering the steering rack
