I've never opened the rack itself, but I have unbolted and replaced the unit as a whole. Removed the tie rod ends at either end and unbolt the rack from the frame.
After you pull the boot back (and remove the outer from the spindle) the inners will un-screw from the rack. Get on Babbits (or anywhere else that shows the parts break down) , and you will see how it all goes together...you should also be able to find the service manual on here and download it.2007 Rhino 450 long story short: the steering linkage stripped out the gear on top of the rack and pinion.
I have a used steering gear assy, steering linkage and NIB rack and pinion. Could one of you gear heads please give me step by step how to uninstall (properly or at least without damage) the existing. The used portions of the replacement parts are in great condition and I even have new set bolts for the upper and lower linkage fasteners. The rack and pinion looks like fun to replace. Lots of parts. Thank you in advance and please dumb it down. I learn from experience, I try to make them successful good experiences lol. Peace.
