Hey guys I have a oil leak at the oil seal behind the yolk that goes in the front of the tranny. I have already got the seal coming, my question is the manual shows this as being pretty cut and dry. Is the drive shaft universal joint easy to get apart? Is this seal a pretty common problem? The repair looks fairly simple disassemble drive shaft and move out of way, un bolt yolk and remove, replace seal and reassemble. Let me know if you have any tips that might help out. Thanks, Stan

ya

dont drain the oil,undo the long front bolt on the diff and the two shorter bolts on the side of the diff,all three have a 14mm head,slide the diff down and forward,shaft slides out of the ujoint,then u have to get the clips off the universal cups and tap it to one side and then slide out the joint,then use an impact to undo it from the through shaft and carefully pull out the seal and carefully push in the new one,grease the joints and spline on the driveshaft before u put it all back together...will take about an hour,done a few of them,its commom after some hours of useage...

Also, it is common for the nut that holds the yoke on to come loose. This is often the source of oil leakage in that area. Many people have mistakenly thought they needed a new seal when it was just a loose nut. Regardless, Camshaw's directions are good.

I'm a little confused on this process mine is leaking where the shaft on the yoke goes into the motor. Do I need to remove the front diff on front axel to get the shaft out I am a real shade tree mech. and I don't want to pay 100 bucks an hour and wait a month to get it in the local Yamaha shop.

take out 3 bolts in front diff and slide it down and forward and pull the shaft forward and out of the yoke. pry out clips on joint closest to nut. take off nut and install new seal with yamahabond on OD and re install with loctite on the nut. takes an hour

Front diff.

You make it sound easy is there enough room to do all that without taking the whole front end apart? Does all the cv joints stay attached I'm just a bit worried since I've never done one before

Cam Shaaw if you're still out there--excellent post. A couple questions while I wait for the seal to arrive. 1) Can you reuse the universal clips? 2 The universal pin will come out with a few taps and a press is not needed as the manual states? I'd imaging a c-clamp will do the job too. 3) You have to move the diff and not just pull the u-joint pin and move the joint forward? Too long of a shaft in there? Thank you everyone as you saved me a good amount of money and down time.
