There is a switch that “closes” when you push on the brake that enables the starter to engage. Twice now I have almost been stranded, took me a while the first time this happened to figure out the problem. Seems like it gets dirt in it causing it to not function properly. Has anyone disabled this switch so pushing on the brake isn’t necessary? Or should I just replace it?

Try spraying some contact or brake cleaner or WD-40 on the plunger and work it back and forth, then try adjusting the switch. Might be as simple as that.

If that doesn't work, bypass the switch and see if the unit starts while in gear. If it does, replace the switch.

If you choose to disable the switch altogether you will lose the brake lights. May not matter to you but just an FYI.
