Chromoly or DOM. They will both hold up fine on a Rhino. .095 is safe and light. .120 wall is safer but heavier. Pick your poison.
Don't use pipe!!! It will split at the seam on the first impact.
If you're in Phoenix, check out Tubeworks or Phoeniz Tube. They have great prices on Chromoly and DOM. That's whomost of your fab shops buys theirs from.
Yes mr. Pat, it is already built. Fabricator used 1 - 1/4" 30 sched. He uses it on the 4x4 jeeps here in Mexico and says that this holds well.
I want to build more but I want to do it with same materials that are used in the US.

.083 will crumble on a roll. Use .095 minimum. I would honestly take all that schedule 30 out of there is you are using it for a cage. It's fine for aesthetic items like light bars, but never use it as a roll cage. It will snap right at the seam.
how much diff is there from .083 and .095 anyways ? chromoly is stronger to so its cool.... people use .095 on mild steel so if chromoly is stronger then im sure u could go down a size.? no ?
Same difference as .095 and .120. Chromoly is stronger mostly cause the welds penetrate better. Chromoly is a very brittle material. I've never heard of .083 being used on anything offroad related but aesthetic items like a lightbar and I've been fabricating stuff for 15+ years.
id be more concerned with the size (1-1/4) then the thickness at this point and how its braced. you can build a cage out of thinner tube but will ultimatly end up with the same wieght after you x brace evrything. i would use DOM 1-1/2 to 1-3/4 min .095 with a mixture of .120 where potential better supporting is needed; this is what i use on all my offraod builds/cages and i have never had a problem in any roll overs...
I didn't even realize til now that 1-1/4" was used. I agree with everything John said. Sch. 30 pipe scares me as well no matter what size. but, to each his own.
Sch 30 is for water tensile strenght and not for structural purpose. Pipe will crack at the seams or welds when bent. Do u have any pics on what they built for you
when i was a kid my best fiend and i bought a hydrolic bender that was used for gas pipe from harbor freight and used to build go carts and minibikes. so i actually have a lot of experience with the junk and thats about all its good for. i would never concider using it for any serious structural work...
On some pictures you will see that shape is being tacked only, the welds I don't know if you can tell much by pictures.
Thing is as I explained befofre fabricator says that's what they use on the 4x4 jeeps here, and that they have been upside down quite a few times with no issues.
The guy is either lying or is ignorant to the fact that sched 30 breaks upon impact. As far as I can tell a jeep is much heavier than a sxs, so I don't get it. I am not saying that this is the best way to go, but based on previously mentioned facts I don't know what to think.
You have more experience, so please enlighten me as to why they use this in heavier vehicles here in Mexico and have had no issues according to fabricator.
I will get some of the .125 and built anothe cage, but I would sure like to know why the differences of opinions.
This is what I got and this is what I'll ride; so far no one has been able to answer my questions as to why it is being used in heavier vehicles with no issues so far yet. Vehicles that do roll over.
Anyways, I will make another one with what's recommended, but if someone out there really knows why this pipe is working with heavier vehicles even though the welds don't look hot enough and why it wouldn't work with sxs's please let me know.
cant aswer your question because i would personaly have to see one that had a decent roll with that set up. i'd be willing to bet that wouldnt hold up under a serious roll over. anyways, good luck and be safe...
I just wanted to know why these Mexicans are using this type of tubing and here in the USA is not even something to consider. I may have asked the wrong Mexicans.
I fully trust what you guys are saying since you are the ones that have been doing the serious racing and testing along the way for a number of years now and have probably been there done that with different types of tubing, pipe, sched's, tube splitting and welds braking enough times in the past that today you know what gets the job done safely.
I will be visiting Phoenix soon to get some of the good stuff or if anyone knows a store in Tucson?
use 1 3/4 095 dom and you should be fine Advance metal sales in phoenix gives out great deals and has a ton in stock. That is were we get our steel from. For race vehicles we like to run chromolly but is not nessesary. The reason the tubing being used for the jeep cages is got to be because of the supports that are in them and the sppeds of the roll overs have got to be low speeds. If you were to roll the jeeps over at 40 plus mph there is a good chance the cage would be torn apart and split at the seems.
Does the tube you are using have pipe standard markings on it all? Like schedule, ANSI standards, Made in and so on. Schedule 30 pipe , if I'm not mistaken, is what they use for fire sprinklers.
Schedule 30 pipe is for Sprinkler systems. Schedule 40 and 80 are used for gas piping systems and yes they are coated black. I have a Fire Sprinkler, Plumbing and HVAC license and use the stuff all day long. It is also different diameters than tube. Tube is measured by the outside dimension. Pipe is measured by the inside dimension
That's why I was thinking the tube he is using could possibly be Mild Steel and they just call it sch. 30 in Mexico. What size and outside diameter is the pipe they are using on your Rhino and the Jeeps???
I used 3/4" EMT conduit on yours. It should hold up fine. Just don't go over 50mph which you can't do anyways. Hahahahaha.
