Hi guys- I have a stock 07 rhino 660 with about 1200 miles on it. I have been having the same problem with it for about a year now. I can’t seem to figure out what’s wrong with it.
What it is doing while normal trail riding is it will start backfiring real bad(sometimes will die) and runs like it is running real lean. And it won’t let me go very fast but I can usually make it back home just barely! It seems to do it when it is hot after running it for awhile, but I’m not positive that that is the reason for the problem. It seems like it is fuel related still but maybe not.

I have put in a new carb kit, new fuel pump, new fuel line,fuel filter, spark plug, cleaned the carb at least 3 times even though it wasn’t very dirty, checked the fuel pickup from the tank. It starts and idles 10 times better, but still the same issue while trail riding? Any help would be much appreciated. This is getting very frustrating!! Thanks Guys….

The next time it happens, unscrew the gas cap and see if it clears up. If it does, check the roll over valve. You can pull it off and check to see if its plugged. You should hear a rattling sound. Also, check the fuel pickup on top of the tank. The oem plastic do crack, if so purchase a billet pickup.

I am having the same problem with my 07 660 as well. it starts to act up when im crusing under mid to light throttle aplications. i have done the same thing, clean out carb, plug etc.. i also swapped the cdi box wich helped but still cuts out. It seems to be leaning out as well. after it missfires and shuts off i have to let it sit for a minute or so and then it fire back up runs good for a few minutes and does the same thing, engine can be hot or cold doesnt matter. can you remove the rollover valve and were is it loctaed in the tank?

The rollover valve is on the end of the fuel tank vent hose located in front of the fuel pump. It also has a short hose(approx 4") that goes into the roll cage behind the pass seat.

these are a common issue, sorry im new.
It has happened to my son inlaws, mine and several others. Fuel filter and stock pump failures are common. Weller Racing offers an aftermarket fuel pump and line kit that eliminate the fuel pump problems. The line kit is clear(discolors some after time, but fuel is still visible) and helps in diagnosing and improves flow.

Backfiring(but not dying) can also be a cracked exhaust, rich conditions and ...

OK this might not fix yours but I had the same issue with my 07. Back fired all the time when I first got it. put a jet kit in and that fixed it. About 2 months after the jet kit it started back firing again. Cleaned carb, filters... etc. One day riding the stock exhaust broke in three pieces. After that happened the backfirig stopped. I installed a new muzzy dual exhaust and it still doesnt backfire. The muffler must have been clogged up from water/mud riding... Try taking just the muffler off and going for a ride. If the backfiring stop thats your problem. Wear ear plugs. stupid loud!!

I think it's good old fashioned vapor lock. It happened to me for the first time this year. It was a hundred degrees and the last time I had it out was before Memorial Day. I never ride in the summer.
First I smelled gas, the a little while later a backfire, then it died soon after. I had been going up hill for maybe 10 miles or so.
I pulled the engine cover, and poured water on the fuel line that runs along the engine, and the carb too. It started and ran perfectly immediately. Made it the rest of the day with no problems until I was near my truck. It died again and I coasted to my truck. Poured water again, and it was fine again. I'm thinking of relocating the fuel line away from the motor and maybe insulating it. I have also though of installing a small fan to remove heat from the engine compartment. Then I said the hell with it. I don't like riding when it's a hundred degrees anyway!

Ok thanks guys... Yeah I took it for a ride today(about 32 miles) and it ran great?? Going for a longer ride tom so will see what happens. I really don't think it is a carb problem anymore, but I could be wrong. Thinking back I know at least twice it acted up after going through water? But also I remember last fall I had a problem and I didn't go through any water. But the problem is much better after doing the carb and other stuff I did vs last fall. I dunno??!! lol The only other thing I thought of was the full windshield I have getting to hot in the cab. Its one that folds and I had it down on my ride today. I'll check the cap the next time it happens.

Yeah absolutly, im up for any suggestions. I'll check it out. I dunno how bad yours would act up but mine is really bad when it happens. It almost acts like its at the rev limiter but alot worse with the back fire here and there.

i have a 07 660 as well. just got it a few weeks ago. me and a buddy was ridin it and layed it on its side the first day i got it (has a 3in lift and was a little more top heavy than expected). Didnt hurt anything and was on its side for maybe a minute before we flipped it back. From then on it has a backfire to it. only happens when im hard in the gas then let off and coast a second and then bam it back fires. back fire is in the exhaust. When I bought it came with stock exhaust on it and he included a aftermarket one that he said was too loud for him.
would it quit backfiring if I put on the aftermarket exhaust?

WOW!! I have the same problem, I put a new fuel pump on, and now it runs good but quits, I was messin around under the hood and just for no reason i pulled the vacume line off of the pump, and turned it over It started right up and ran the whole weekend, fine except the back fire. so i am hearing that the exhaust might be plugged, or broken UH?? gonna try it, but next time yers dies for no reason pull the vacume line off and crank it over, worked for me. mechanics here in wyo. get 70.00 an hour, and theres only one. so gotta do it myself. thanks for the info
