Hey guys I’ve got an 04 660 that blew the mid drive apart. It’s getting a motor swap just haven’t decided which one yet. Leaning towards an r6 build. Don’t need the 1k for running around the woods in WV. Just looking for more juice. I know it’s been done but I can’t find any pictures of an install other than “r1 rhinos” build. Looking at using a reverse box made for a cycle powered car for reverse. Can y’all point me in the right direction of a thread. Looking to find a thread with some pictures of how to mount one inline with the driveshaft. Possibly running a chain drive straight to the drive shaft right after the reverse box? I’ve been searching on google for a couple months and through the search bar on here and can’t find what I’m looking for.

Man sounds like alot of work. Me personally i think i would by a built 660 motor slap it in and go. Camshaw on here use to build some bullet proof 660motors
Wish i could help ya find what ur looking for but if your set on a build please start a thread on the build and post pics.

A tompro or rpm gearbox would make the swap a breeze and give you reverse. The tall gearing and high rpms needed for any usable power make the practical use in the woods to lack some desire

Well the reason to not build the 660 is because the cases are trashed along with a list of other parts that are trashed from years of abuse. I’ve got a buddy that’s gonna buy the unused 660 parts for enough to cover the cost of a running 600 rocket (without a title) and I need a project lol. Winter times are slow at work and I get stir crazy when I get laid off.

As mentioned earlier, steer away from a higher RPM engine for woods use...and you will be very unhappy without a reverse...those forward-only Rhinos are at home in the dunes, and no where else.

I would suggest a Rotax conversion if you had to do a swap of anykind....it raises the Yamaha 660s 23 up to between 57-60 Rotax RWHP.

And seriously, any conversion into the Rhino today is way behind times, and hard to justify the time and parts to do...JMO.... been there, done that.

Can you point me to a rotax thread that doesn’t use the ryr kit? I’m good with fab work as it’s part of my job. Reason that I didn’t ask bout that one is those motors are hard to come by in my area without buying a complete quad that runs. Then your lookin at buying a 3-4K quad just for the motor. Kinda out of my price range

I have driven one, R6 swapped. It had a dual range box, so 12 speeds (6 high & 6 low). Top speed was about 115 in 6th/hi. In low it was maybe 75 (6th/low)-both at close to 14,000 RPM. Have also tried to ride it in woods. Useless. The R6 has zero torque down low, below about 6500 RPM is where it starts making power. Even then, you had to keep it mostly wound up which means heat & noise with the noise being an issue (no USFS spark arrestor). Yes it was kind of cool but it was utterly useless for anything but dunes and there ain't any dunes here.

If it were me, I'd find another 660 engine. It ran as long as it did until it blew. The next one you put in, take better care of it and it'll last a long time again. That is, unless you just hate the 660 engine and like to spend lots of money and fiddle with it on a seemingly continual basis.

If you "had" to do a 4 cylinder bike engine, see if you can find an OLDER engine, not so much a crotch rocket style bike, but maybe like an older Seca or something along those lines.....they don't have to run a million RPM to make power, and they run quieter and a lot smoother. etc. Try to stay liquid cooled if possible. Makes things a lot more comfortable since the engine ends up in the middle. That or figure out how to blow air across it and keep it cool without overheating the fuel tank and/or driver & passenger.

Kind of a side story but years ago I had this old Mojave 250, this was back about 1998. I used to drag race it on the dirt drag track locally, with the 250 engine. It was a lot faster than you'd have thought but it wasn't totally stock. Anyway, it broke a valve off and ate up the head, cylinder, piston, etc. I couldn't afford that expensive head so I swapped in a CBR600 engine that I already had, as it was a drag bike. The CBR engine was about twice the weight of the Mojave engine, so the bike's center of gravity changed among many other things. The chassis-as good as a stock Mojave is-was not designed for 120hp. Not even with the Lakota swingarm which is a little longer than the Mojave. It was wheelie prone obviously. Easy fix, wheelie bar and while that fixed it, it's ET's and MPH weren't a lot better than the old 250 was. Sounded cool. I raced it off and on for about 4 years. In about '01 the Raptor 660 came out and people were showing up at the drag strip with them. Torque monsters, and somewhat quick if you could keep the front end down. Well I was paired against a stock 660 in a semi-final round and our dial-in (bracket racing) was within a tenth, which on a dirt drag is pretty close. We both ran our dial-ins he had a better light and took the win. But it struck me odd that the stock 660 was as fast as a 120hp CBR swapped Mojave. Point is, more horsepower means nothing if you can't control it. Later on I bought an '05 Raptor and rode it everywhere, didn't abuse it at all but I also didn't ride it easy. What struck me the most was how well it is balanced (even though it was a little top heavy), how well it would just pull through the woods without a downshift, you could lug it down to about 2000 RPM and just cruise along in 5th at about 25 mph, come up to a hill, just throttle it and go on. I tried to woods ride the CBR/Mojave and it was possible but the engine had to be running pretty hard to make usable power. That engine was never designed to run slow at higher RPM, so it was always running hotter than I liked, and made a lot of noise. I ended up selling it to a friend who continued to race it until it blew, then he put a KLR650 engine on it (to be like the Raptor boys) and to my knowledge still has it, probably laying out in the weeds.

I know it’s not as new or have the power of a commander but my buddy has a commander that walked from me on blacktop. At the other end they were all waiting on me, in the woods it did alright but still lacked some. I did notice the commander was bottoming out where I wasn’t so that was nice. My background is racing as well so part of me wants to do it just to do it and the other part wants to do it to go faster. I’ve got shoulder issues that are now keeping me off of my quads and bikes so this is gonna be my new toy

V twin? Possibly. Problem with a V-twin is that it's not only tall, but also big lengthwise-especially considering that the transmission is built into the engine like most bike engines are.

I got another idea. Find you a snowmobile and rob some of the drivetrain. I once drove a Mule 1000 that had a Ski-doo engine/trans swapped into it and it was an absolute beast-yet controllable enough to actually use. Unfortunately it was on a Mule 1000....which has the worst suspension known to man.

I thought about that too, do you happen to know what was used other than just a sled drivetrain? I know they use an apex in the rzr, but that tranny is a different setup than the rhino. I was considering that route until I found that out

Within this Network of ownership, we have an additional Rhino forum site (Rhinotalk.net) that was the big engine swapping site..there are close to 180 threads with probably 75% of them regarding the Rotax swap.

My swap is one of many in there, and yes, I did it before the RYR kit came out....if fact, I took my swapped setup over to Muzzy's in Bend, Or. for them to jig their swap exhaust off of for that RYR kit option.

This link should at least get you to the proper forum.....the discussions started about in mid- 2008.

I'm super curious where you drove this R6 power rhino with 4x4 and hi and lo range...was it yours?, a customer's? Maybe mine? I'm all ears....
