Question Rhino 700 running rough

Hi, I am working on a friends 2009 Rhino 700 which is difficult to start and when it is running seems to be missing and maybe backfiring at high revs. Seems to idle ok. The history is that it started running rough and misfiring then started being hard to turn over - starter motor just clicks but doesn't crank over and wouldn't start at all. Found the starter motor and solenoid were defective and replaced both. Now it will crank over, but only if I jump start directly onto starter, so I guess I have bad connections somewhere. All connections seem ok, but any ideas would be appreciated. When it does start, it idles ok and all of the sensors appear normal, but when revved it gets a crackle and hesitation at high revs and seems to have a bit of a backfire. I did find some of the wiring harness had been chewed by rats, but have replaced those wires. Checked timing, coil, fuel pump pressure, all of the FI sensors and all seem ok. Tried new spark plug, no difference. Anyone have any ideas?

Is the ECU throwing off any error codes? The starting issue sounds like either a bad battery or a bad ground.

Here's a video to get into diagnostic mode. Station 60 and 61 should equal 00 if there are no fault codes. What does your beast show for these stations?

Thanks for the response. Not showing any error codes. Have also worked through the diagnostic mode and checked all sensors and everything is within range. Tried a new battery. Not sure about earths. Resistance measurement shows its ok, but maybe it changes when it draws starter current. Will run an extra earth cable to make sure. Any thoughts on why it runs rough and crackles when it is revved?

I'm thinking possibly the cam timing, but it sounds like you already checked this. Did you test the stator as well? Might be failing and causing probs. Also wouldn't hurt to ensure the valves are within spec.

Mine did the same thing. Everything tested good. Ended up being a bad stator. Only way we knew was to take it out and you could visibly see all phase 1 coils were burnt. Get a new one from Rickeystator. Dont buy the cheap China Ebay crap for 30-50 dollars. Pay the 175 from rickeystator. At least take the cover off and visually inspect the stator. Let us know what you find. Good luck..

Thanks. It has been cold down here in OZ for the past week or so, so I haven't ventured into the shed for a while. Will pull the covers and look at the stator in the next week or two and let you know.

With your description a basic starting point would be to load test your battery. Many folks mistakenly think that if the battery shows 12 volts then its okay. You cannot rule out a battery until you properly load test it. Go down to your local discount tool store and add a battery load tester to your tool inventory (about $15+-). If your battery cannot maintain a load then replace it before any further diagnostic steps. You may indeed have additional issues, but a healthy battery is your starting point.
