686 build gone bad

Thought I’d share some pics of what was left of this engine. Previous owner said he had only 10 hours on the build. I put everything back to stock.

I like stock, unless you know some tricks for a rebuild, stock is reliable.

Thatís what Iím shooting for as I want something reliable for me and my wife to enjoy since I have other dirt toys to go fast on. By the time Iím done with this thing itís going to be an almost new machine.

Well that's a pretty sad looking state of affairs. Is that a crack in the case next to the oil pump mounting? Looks like a total loss from here. I agree that given you have other toys you should keep this one pure stock. The Yami engineers seem to have what it takes to design reliable machines which is why I've used their products exclusively for over 50 years now. I am a mechanic by trade (well, previous life anyway..) but prefer not to spend my experience working on toys.

Of course, on second thought, just put a Rotax in it and keep all your toys competitive...

Yup, cracked oil pump. We think, that the shop that put it together didnít have it and the water pump timed right and forced the cases together thus cracking the pump and starving the engine of oil. Hard to say though, the previous owner said the wrist pin walking out of the piston happened to the 686 he had before and I know he was really hard on this thing.

All new parts are Yamaha except I upgraded the middle drive gear with a Weller since it has bigger tires. Weíre just going to use it for Colorado Mountain pass roads since Itís too wide for the trails.

One question I do have is, what is the clutch filter for? There was a UNI on it and it was so clogged with dust that I threw it away and bought a new one. Also, what is the fan on the other side supposed to do?

I saw the crack in the oil pump - but what about what appears to be a crack in the case close to the mounting base of the pump?

Must have been debris. No cracks in the cases were found.

Itís alive and finally out of my garage. I still need to break in the engine, dial in the carb, and install a water temp gauge that Iím waiting to ship. It has an HMF exhaust and Iím not thrilled about the decibels so I might look into something quieter. But, Iím glad itís ďdoneĒ and now to wait for the snow to melt so I can hit some mountain passes.

They didn't come with the UNI filter, the fan on the passenger side has a 3" tube going to the header pipes to blow cool air on them.

Thanks, I ordered a new UNI and will keep it clean, unlike the previous owner.

The roof came off my son in-laws 09 700, the windshield is a stock full that I cut in half. I don't run a windshield anymore as it sucks in to much dust at over 20 MPH.
