06’ 450 Smoking/Top End How To

I recently bought a Rhino. It’s my first side by side. It was cheap so jumped on it. However, the oil was low and black. And once I did an oil change it began smoking pretty dang bad so...I’m thinking of a top end rebuild. It will only be used to put put so no big deal but, I can’t find any good how to for the 450. Only 660. Also, any suggestions if I should have head serviced?

Get a Yamaha service manual and it will walk you through the whole top end rebuild.

Welcome to the site, rebuild is above my pay scale, hopefully if someone has done it they chime in. You can go to Tinken's signature on hear and download a maint manual just click on your engine size. My 05 660 is starting to smoke so I've been adding Lucas oil treatment and it has calmed down a lot, but the day is coming....

FLOYD, SANDI & Sadie is the co-pilot. 05 660, 3000# VENOM WINCH, LED headlight Mod, 12' led light bar RZR seats, Resi shocks, SunF 26 X 9r X 12, CUSTOM PAINT(the rescue chopper can find us know)

On a good note, you donít have to split the cases. The main thing is to not drop the cam chain.

While I have it apart, would y’all recommend having the head worked?

So,,,,,to add to everything I’m noticing a pattern which may help the more knowledgeable diagnose maybe what my issue is. It seems that most of the smoking is at startup. I can fire it up and let it idle for a few minutes then once I smash the gas it pours smoke. Then after getting up to speed and riding for a minute it gets way better. Thoughts?

I’m thinking I’ll have it bored either way to be honest but I’m leaning toward valve guides

I would say rings if it stops after its warm, if its warm and u mash it and it smokes then valves

I thought it was bad valve seats if it smokes when itís cold and bad rings if it smokes when itís warm and you mash the gas?

Either way, if it were me going through all of that Iíd do a piston and rings while I was in there.

It’s blue smoke. You can smell the oil and I haven’t ridden it enough to matter yet for oil level. I live in a subdivision and ride my kids around a couple blocks is all lol
