Wet Clutch Replacement

I had a wet clutch failure on a 660 Rhino. I have replace it with a new one according to the Work Shop Manual (free weeling clockwise). The problem that i experience is that drive engages directly when shifting from neutral to gear. It seems that the clutch is not working at all. assistance will be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like the one-way sprag clutch is mounted backwards. It looks like a needle roller bearing, but it does not spin one direction while spinning free in the other direction. This is what gives the machine engine braking during decelleration, in spite of the centrifugal clutch having disengaged due to low engine rpm.

How do you go about changing the wet clutch? It feels like mine may be a little worn. It takes higher rpms to get my machine moving. Do they make kits for this or do you buy one from yamaha?

I have the same question. I've opened the belt cover and the belt is good, so now I need to know how to tackle the wet clutch.

find yourself a copy of the service manual, it gives you good instructions to folllow and it is not to hard of a job to do. I just replaced my ome wet clutch in my 700 with a Dr.Pulley hit clutch on the weekend and i had to remove it a few times to get the spring settings right so I can tear it down inside a hour and be back riding so like i said find a service manual and take a look at it. should be a link on here somewhere for one .

I found the service manual for my rhino 660 at

Primary and Secondary Sheaves are detailed on page 182
Clutch diagram is on page 191

Just purchased a clutch carrier assembly, clutch housing, and one way bearing from Yamaha Parts at 30% off, Yamaha Accessories 25% off, Star Accessories 25% off, Portland oregon they have the best price from what I could find. But you need to open it up first to see what the problem is. If you have metal to metal you will need the above, also an oil seal (b/c you will damage it taking it out) and a gasket. I spent about $470 on everything. Not a hard job if you have a manual. Good luck with it!

The one way bearing is definatly in backwards. You are pretty much back to square one with disassembly

Methinks the thread has taken a turn here. The original poster has not returned and the issue is now clutch slippage rather than continual power transmission.
