I don't have one YET but plan on it. I have a buddy that runs one in his sand rail and the display is great. There is one in the Gear One Race Rhino and it has worked great so far. I know that there are several guys on here that run them as well. I am sure they will speak up.

The "baja" version is the one all the Trophy Trucks use in the Baja 500 and 1000 so it's probably the best one you can get IMO

I have a 540c in my rhino and love it. The price is pretty good. It fits really nice in the warning label area. Almost like it was made for the rhino dash. Get the Freedom Map card for more details of the maps. Havent had any problems with them in the race cars or the rhino. Very user friendly.

Why is it every time I look these up it says they are for marine navigation?

I have the 540c and would not give it up for anything. I use it on trails and for search and rescue...
mosslager its funny you ask why it says Marine. Lowrance originally built everything marine and the 540c will work for the marine. it is easier for them to say marine then dirt. The 540c will take a beating and keep on finding... hey if you really want put the depth finder on it that way when you hit a good mud puddle it will tell you how deep it is. (jk)

Kind of like those 'Marine Iguanas' at the Galapagos Island? How would a salesman advertise to those guys, eh?

Are the maps, and 'navigation techniques', supplied with the widget appropriate for the terrain? I'd hate to have too many 'sandbars' warnings flash up on the screen! J/K... Actually, I am most interested in the details in the 'trails' and topographical stuff. If the stock gadget is less than perfect, are there appropriate 'maps' to buy?

The factory maps are ok. If you want great detail buy the "Freedom Map" card for the region. I bought it and WOW what detail. Money very well spent! With the 540 you can have onscreen display. I have volts, altitude and mph. If you have any other questions please ask. You will be very happy wth it. We also use them in our desert race vehicles.

Congrats! I flush mounted mine in place of the warning label. LEI has a flush mount bracket that I used. I am able to use it with my 5 point belts on. Let me know if you want pics. Very easy install.

Cool... thanks for the tip on the flush mount bracket. I cut the hole out in the dash in same place you did. Def a good location for it!
