CA No Spark

Took the family on our annual summer camping trip to Kennedy Meadows to do some trail riding this weekend. I did a quick check to make sure everything was running and we did not have any issues before we left camp and headed to the trail head.

Once we arrived at the trail head the battery would not crank the engine. We jumped it and it started up no problem. Let it idle for a couple on min while everyone geared up. Once we tried to take off it started spitting and sputtering like a wet plug and it finally quit. Jumped it again seemed to run good until the jumper cable came off and then the same issue.

We loaded it back on the trailer and took it back to camp. Pulled the plug while my father took a three hour trek down the mountain to get a new battery. Once the new battery was installed we now have no spark.

I'm thinking that the coil or stator shorted because of the bad battery or during the jump starts.

Does anyone have any ideas what the issue might be?

If you pull the air box under it is like a wire going into the top of moter or trans. If i am not mistaking this is a reverse lock out wire. Check to see if the wire is off or if it is loose at the connection. I just plugged my back in when we were on a ride and it fired right up that should fix the problem. Good luck.

Thank for the suggestion, I'll check it out. Would that keep it from cranking or just keep the plug from firing?

Could be a bad stator

there is also a fuse in the end of the plug wire, this can fall out when removing the plug wire, so pay attention.

I tried to to dig into the issue tonight and now have another twist. Yesterday I tried to crank the engine just to see if the problem corrected it's self (wishful thinking). It cranked but still no spark to the plug. So this evening I checked the connection under the air box and I checked to make sure the fuse and spring in the plug cap were still in place. I turned the key and nothing. The dash does not light up and the engine will not crank. The lights work and the battery is new and has a full charge.

I jumped the connections on the starter solenoid and it cranks strong but still no spark.

Does anyone have any suggestions on my new and prior problem?

is the ground loose or off of the engine block, pass side near shifter linkage, next would be to check the Key switch for proper function.

It turned out to be the CDI. Put a new box in and started right up.
