Question How to replace seal on rear driveshaft?

Does anyone have any pictures or explanations of how to change the oil seal on the rear driveshaft? I'm talking about the shaft that exits the motor next to the oil filter on the 700 models. Mine is leaking from the plastic boot and I have a new seal ready to go but i'm not quite sure on the procedure.

What I "think" I understand so far, correct me if I'm wrong:

I have to remove the two bolts holding the rear differential and then slide it back until the shaft comes out of the engine. Somewhere there is a nut that holds the shaft and it may or maynot have come loose causing the oil leak. The seal that needs to be replaced is somewhere behind that nut.

Here is a link to another post with a picture that shows exactly where mine is leaking.

rear oil leak.

I have the service manual but the pictures don't explain much of anything. Can anyone help me out with some good pictures or a thorough explanation at least? Thanks for any help!

I had to remove both rear axles to get my rear diff to move far enough back for the driveshaft to come out. There is a spring in there between the engine and the shaft dont lose that. I did not remove the brake assembly from the diff.

Thanks for the information Superchikn.

I have seen posts where people say that you can remove the driveshaft without having to remove both rear axles. I have also seen one that recommended removing the rear shocks and then moving the differential back and up to pull the driveshaft out of the motor. I sure hope I can get it out without having to remove both axles. Anyone else have any info or tips before I attempt this tomorrow?

The axles come out pretty easy but you will leak diff fluid so have a pan under there. Good luck with it.

Just replaced the rear rotor Sat, removed all the bolts off of the rear diff and it slid back far enough (with some gentle persuasion) to get the drive line out of the rear diff without removing the rear axles. When the drive line comes out it will come out with the "stepup gear" attached to it with a snap ring. Good luck.

So remove the driveline from the rear diff first then slide it forward to remove it from the engine?

Spent six hours trying to get this job done. We were able to remove both rear shocks and get enough clearance to remove the drive shaft. We tried three different impact guns and two different air compressors (5gal and 10 gal). Nothing we tried will remove that 22mm nut so we can get to the seal to replace it.

Anyone know how much force it is going to take? We tried breaker bars with zero luck. I'm asking around to get a bigger portable air compressor but if I can not find one I guess we will have to put rear wheels on and push it into my trailer and bring it to a friends auto shop for some heavy duty air tools. What a PITA!
