Glamis thanksgiving 2013 crash photo

I took a couple pics of a crash at the bottom of Oldsmobile on thanksgiving weekend. I didn't actually see it happen so I don't know the condition of people involved but looks pretty nasty and I hope they are Ok..

horrible one. One bystander next to that sandrail underneath was hit and didn't make it. My condolences to the family, what a bad deal.

We've seen this rail at Olds on several weekends and the guy driving is always driving like an F**n idiot. We were really surprised when he didn't hit someone last New Years. Accident waiting to happen!

A friend of mine was out there when it happened. He is always trying to get me to go and my fear is some maroon ( yes I know the correct spelling-Daffy Duck) will run into me or perhaps I would be the maroon.

RIP those who passed.

the drivers of these rails seem to be unskilled and out of control, crashing and full throttle passes twenty feet from spectators, total idiots in my opinion....sad for their loss...

This is what I don't understand, is why vehicles under 1000cc requires a helmet but 500+ horsepower rails don't require a helmet.. Seems A$$ backwards in my opinion

because the manufactures dont make rigs that big and all they wanted to do was cover their products so they dont get anymore lawsuits.....but its the Japanese companies who only get sued anyhow, polaris has more deaths in their sxss than yamaha ever did and not one lawsuit and crooked lawyer has tried to sue them at all, remember the first rzr800 trail verson, it rolled easier than a rhino and was documented as being more tipsy in magazines etc than a rhino and still no suits against the american made pooplaris rzr....protection in court is all ROHVA was created for, just protection for the manufacturers...

Actually this type of accident can happen to anyone of us at anytime..

To say rail drivers are unskilled, as a group of drivers is as ignorant as saying all rzr/rhino operators CAN drive.

From the photo, it looks like he was very close to "camp," when his throttle got "stuck." I am not familiar with rails, but I would think (and hope) that builders wire in an emergency engine kill switch. Lot's of HP on those rails!

I hope that the vehicle owner had liability insurance, on his off road vehicle, because he is going to need it!

Condolences to the families.

i have too many times seen dead people and bones sticking out of flesh at the dunes personally and 85% of these crashes were caused by idiots in rails thinking they are Robby Gordon! and only a few feet from spectators, and to clarify i didn't say all rail drivers, I said these, which was directed towards the pictures of the knuckleheads who were driving rails and caused accidents this last weekend. the problem is, the more roll cage around a person the more ****y and confident he gets without the level of skill to compensate..that's a proven fact....but having a friend 20 feet from this particular accident who saw the whole thing can attest too, this rail driver was way out of his skill level of driving. They have a clutch and a shifter and a ignition switch, clearly he was unskilled to handle this car and froze like a oriental driver who ran a red light in the middle of an intersection....sad part is people are dead and maimed because of his lack of driving skills and forethought...throw it in neutral, shut off the ignition and most off-push in the f'n clutch! I grew up in a sand rail and am amazed at the lack of dune edequite that most of the rail drivers these days in the dunes exhibit. They seem to think that because they refinanced their house and pulled out all the equity and spent it on a 400hp rail that they own the road, that they can blindly come jumping off the top of Olds and that they can floor the pedal heading towards people within touching distance....there's part of me that thinks they should have driving lessons prior to operating something that is fast. I see wing nuts everyday who don't have the skill to operate a vehicle and yet they still do, unfortunately scenes like this are becoming more common and the lack of respect for common sense is whats giving the tree hugging democrats more ammunition to lobby the house and close our access to state and federal lands....its sad,but we are all guilty of this to a point....

This driver has been there for many years. So to paint a picture of him being "green" is incorrect. and Actually he avoided many people by steering away from them. The "shifter" isnt as easy as you think being a "sequential" transmission.. Clutch and key could have helped, but in a panic mode, how many people can actually react?

Does the guy drive like a TOOL, sure he does. Was it a bad accident, yes. Anyone care to tell him to stop driving like a **** before hand or previously? What about the TT jumping and driving like total ****s? Is that any different?

And you keep saying rails cause accidents.. You dont think asshats in quads and rzr's dont? Because I can prove differently.

Im not sticking up for this guy more then anyone of us who could in FACT, be in this situation at some point. Rhino, rzr quad or rail..

the captian of the Titanic had a lifetime of maritime training, so I don't buy the idea that he had been driving out there for years as being a qualification to common sense, sorry that point is mute...go talk to a residing blm managing agent, it would probably prove my point more-so that rails and the level of competence that accompanies them seem to cause the most fatalities in the dunes. Large high horsepower and heavy and not particulairly sober drivers at 80 mph is a bad recipe around a crowd. Whenever you show off odds are you're going to get humbled....facts are facts...and rails dont cause accidents like guns don't kill people, its the wingnuts behind the wheel and triggers.....
