Oops Hooked up charger backwards no start

I had a head way up rear moment and hooked up battery charger backwards on rhino 450 the other day. It sat like that for a couple of hours before I noticed. I then hooked it up correctly and the battery took a charge. Now it will turn over but will not start. I am sure I fried something but I haven't had time to dig into it too deeply yet. Any ideas on where to start?

First, disconnect the cables hooking up to the battery, to be safe. Check the battery voltage directly at the terminals with a voltmeter capable of displaying tenths of volts. The battery should read 12.7 Volts, within 1/10 Volt, after sitting unused overnight (and of course, with the correct polarity). A 12.0 Volt reading is half discharged. If low, try charging some more.

The CDI is quite voltage sensitive and will not spark properly if the voltage, while cranking, is less than perhaps 11 Volts. Aftermarket CDI's are worse in this respect. Hopefully, you did not fry the CDI, digital dash, rectifier/regulator and/or isolation diodes by turning the ignition switch on while the battery was at reversed potential.

I have been moving so it took me a while to get back on this. I have checked the voltage on the battery and it is reading -12.4V on the meter. I have checked the fuses as well and can find nothing burned out. Are there any other fuses that I need to check besides the ones under the hood? The headlights work and it will turn over fine there just isn't any spark. What are your recomendations to check/replace next?

This seems rather improbable, but do you really have reversed voltage on the battery terminals? You say that you measured a negative 12.4 Volts. Is that a typo or did you NOT have the red test lead (+) on the meter connected to the red cabled (+) terminal on the battery?

I double checked the voltage after I got the negative reading to make sure I had the red lead on the red terminal and it does read a -12.4.
Would the engine turn over and the head lights work if the polarity was reversed? When I screwed up and had the charger leads reversed it would not turn over. Once I switched them to the correct position and gave it a few hours it would turn over.

The lights would not care what the polarity was. However, the starter motor would run backwards. Because the starter one-way clutch is there, I would expect that the starter motor would spin but the engine would not be cranking over. Most strange.

Now, is the red test lead plugged into the + terminal of the multimeter? If so, use the multimeter to measure the voltage on the battery of your car or truck, just to see if your meter is correct.

Good call on checking the meter on a known good battery. I will confirm it this evening when I get home. Thanks for the help.

Well when I checked the battery on my truck it showed a negative voltage as well. So I pulled the engine cover to check for spark and found that the spark plug wire was off the plug. I know I know I should have checked that first but I thought for sure I had fried something else so I didn't check it. Oh well at least this little "problem" helped me find this website. Thanks for all the advice and help.

Also, you found that your multimeter has a problem as well.... :-)
