Blew up rhino today

For the last couple months my rhino has not been running that great and been smoking from the siphon break at high RPM's. Well right before our last dune trip I changed the oil and took it out. I maybe ran it 4 hours then brought it home. Well today I was getting it ready for pres day weekend and took it up the street and at full throttle it just locked up. I towed it back to the shop and let it cool down for about 30 mins and it would crank over but not start and really make a grinding noise. So i pull the dipstick and its completely out of oil. My thoughts are maybe it broke a ring which is why its been running shitty and burned the oil in only the 4 hours of riding since the change. No leaks no smoking nothing. Has anyone heard of something that would cause these to burn up that much oil that fast. I'm gonna start to pull the head off tomorrow and check it out any tips on dissassembling the motor?

Took the words right outta my mouth.

If it was a ring issue bad enough to burn all the oil(in that short run time) I can't imagine it would even run.

While those are all GREAT replies I wish that was the problem at least i would know what was wrong for sure. Oil was replaced plug still in ect. For the last duning season it has been using oil like crazy but like i said the weirdest part is it does not leak a drop but yet it does not smoke at all its just a little lazy and the top speed is down.

X2....highly recommend you check your oil before turning on the key especially when you knew it was burning oil wickedly quick.

I have seen excessive oil consumption when guys fail to maintain their air filters properly as well. Injest dust/sand which scratches cyl walls and destorys rings and vales seals/seats, etc... Mostly when this stuff happens it comes down to lack of proper maintainance.

On my last trip I burned through a quart & a half in alittle less then 2 hours of riding, only 35 miles. I had just checked it before we left & half way through the ride I could smell burning oil but couldn't see it all that well. By time time I got back it would only go 20mph top speed & stalled while pulling into the driveway.

Bottom line cylinder, piston/rings, & connecting rod were shot, needed a complete rebuild.

I have seen the stock Pistons crack at 100 hours...it will cause you to pump all your oil out the siphon break.

AND- Some earlier model 660 machines have cylinders that are out of round. Once they are bored they are fine but an oem size piston will NEVER seat correctly.

There talking about the oil breather tube that goes to your air filter box. If your unit is a stock set-up you would see the oil blow-by on your air filter & in the bottom of you air box.

Most likely burning it, seems to be a very common problem, recommendation check oil frequently!

I know it's my bad but like I said I went on one 3-4 hour ride with really no break and surely didnt think it would burn it that fast. I guess i will fix it then stop ever half hour or so and check it.
