newbie questions about new Rhino

Guys, I'm a newbie to the Rhino, having just picked it up about a week ago. I've only tried it out on my property. I downloaded the service manual, and find it daunting. Is the Rhino a "hanger queen", needing lots of maintenance, or is the manual just too thorough?

Here's some specific questions I have:
1) In practical terms, are there some maintenance items that are real priorities, and a bunch that are more "fix if needed". The manual suggests so many that I'd never have time to actually ride! Four different types of grease, page after page of routine adjustments, etc., etc.

2) Do you guys actually buy Yamaha engine oil and filters, or can you get what you need at Wally World or Auto Zone?

3) I've seen at least one ad for a paper replacement air filter. Is this better or worse than the Yamaha wet filter?

A couple of other questions:
1) Anyone know of a trailerable cover for the Rhino? All I've seen are "don't trailer".

2) I'm thinking of adding a rear bumper and more substantial A-arm protection. Am I overlooking anything in the way of protection?
Thanks!!!

I use Amsoil and a K&N filter. A rear bumper is nice but be ware on what type......if you still want to dump your bed.

depends on your riding. I use mine around my 40+ acres and have only had to do minor maint. grease, wash, clean, change oil..etc.. the expected stuff. Remember the service manual is for servicing ANYTHING on the ride. I have a theory: If it aint broken or need scheduled maint.. DON"T FIX it.. My 06 660 starts each and everytime and has only failed me when I plugged a fuel filter.. No biggie I carry a spare.

Enjoy it..

Not really. Yami made it easy. requires pliers ( needle or duckbill to get at spring clamps), New filter of course and perhaps a screwdriver.
It is located between the seats and to the rear of the roll bar on my 06. I actually moved mine from that location to on top of the fuel tank under passenger seat to make it easier to replace by just lifting the seat out.

It's like anything else...the more you maintain the more life you will get out of it. I've driven Volvo most of my life and always follow the scheduled maintenance...I know others who do nothing and don't have issues. I think it depends more on how you use it, how hard you run it, and how long you plan to have it. If I'm keeping it...I'm taking care of it! We don't get an opportunity to ride much sand in central Indiana, but I think sand and mud would require overkill on the maintenance schedule. I us a WIX filter and 10/40 oil. I use lithium grease where I can and keep everything lubed. Also...SuperATV has a great rear bumper for a $110 bones...heavy duty and and allows the bed to dump.

My experience mirrors expoman's. I have an 06 660 and a plugged fuel filter has been my only problem. I am disabled, so the only maintenance it gets is when I take it to the dealer as per schedule.

As others have pointed out, how/where you ride will dictate a different maintenance regimen. When I rode dirt bikes hard, I serviced/checked them the day before each ride.

I ride in the woods and mud mostly...just keep everything clean, greased, and change the oils on a regular basis. I've got an '07 Grizzly and didnt really take care of it like I should have considering what I put it through, making up for it now with my '07 Rhino. I live in southern arkansas, maybe I'll see you around..

Thanks, guys, for all the feedback. I plan to do regular maintenance, but not get fixated on it. I figure machines are here to serve us, not the other way around.

Oops, one more thing. No one responded to my question about air filters. Is there an adequate disposable paper air filter, or am I stuck with the OEM oiled filter? I thought I saw one on a web site.

I don't think the fuel injected Rhino's have the same fuel filter issue as the carb models. someone here knows more than me and can comment but I think the fuel filter on the 700 fuel injected model is inside the fuel tank.

I don't know about disposable air filters, so again someone else will want to comment on that.

Get a UNI air filter, they are a much better filter then the oem, and I think better then the kN, for the reason that I had put a KN air filter in my 660 and the pre filter ripped apart on the 1st ride.... UNI since then and in my 700 now.
