speedometer not working 660 rhino

My '06 660 had a working speedometer. I recently replaced the starter relay. We had a wire attached on the hot side of the relay, that melted on the first ride after that. The melted wire was like a 16g wire that went to a different relay. I think it was a 30A relay that controls some after-market accessories. My guess is that the hot wire for this relay (the one that melted) may have already been exposed/bared somewhere and maybe moving everything around caused it to short out and melt.

I've replaced the melted wire and the 30A relay still seems to work. The starter relay still works aswell. That's the good news. Bad news is, my speedometer seems to not work. It displays "0" and all the other functions work, but the actual speed doesn't display, and the odometer doesn't count the mileage.

How does the speed/mileage info get relayed from the drivetrain to the the speedo? I want to check and see if that info is getting relayed, or if there is power there, before I conclude that my digital display is poched.

does anybody know how the signal gets sent to the speedometer to display the speed? Which wire to check?

On the 660 there is a speed sensor by the oil dip stick. That should be a good place to start.

sorry, haven't done it yet. I usually post my fixes once I finally I get therm. I think of it as a courtesy to those that take the time to search like you did, and to those that tried to help by posting. I wish more people would do the same. i'm really leaning to the speed sensor first tho. that's where I'll check first.

Do you have stock ECU and stock CVT...

If so...do you still hit rev limiter at 40 mph...

The speed sensor on the 07 is located on the top of the engine on the left side. it's kinds towards the front of the Rhino and inder the gear shift. it has three wires coming out of it. Anyone know how to test it because my speedometer only displays 0 mph and does not register any miles. but the hour meter is working.

sorry, mine is still a project. the flippin top end rebuild isn't working & won't start... maybe I'm not timed right. so I haven't been able to pin mine down. the sensor is a way cheaper/easier way to start. if not, I'd assume speedo head needs replacing.

WRR, thanks for the response. Good luck with getting it started. I read in another thread that someone had to change their CDI and their speedo started working again so I'm going to try to unplug/plug mine back in and see if it helps. I have a Black Rhino Performance CDI - maybe there is a problem with it?

I suppose it's possible, but I find that highly doubtful. I had a black rhino and went back to stock. not sure which one I had when this happened. A stock CDI from ebay is pretty cheap too,

My black rhino was a early one and the speedo did not work I got a new rhino cdi and now the speedo works. I changed the speed sensor and that did not help. So it was the cdi for me that was the problem.

Thanks Joe. I wondered about that. I'll see if I can borow one from a friend to test with. I think my Black Rhino Performance CDI is probably an older one too.
