2004 oil leak

I have a 2004 Rhino 660 and it has about 2,000 miles on it. I had it parked and about an hour later there was a large amount of oil underneath it. I jacked it up, took off skid plates and pressure washed it. It appears as if the oil is coming from the area around the front drive line at the engine. Tomorrow I am going to put some oil in it and see if I can tell where the leak is. I checked the dip stick and it does not register any oil. When I parked it, it had been running good and made no strange engine noises. Any ideas?

I am chasing the same problem on my 04. Oil is coming thru thr spline on the drive shaft. Think the nut has loosen, have a new seal and nut and washer ordered. When it gets here I will take apart and replace front seal and the washer and nut with new. Hope this fixes the problem.

I added a small amount of oil this morning and it was just slightly low and that is why it did not register on the dip stick. I added about 1/2 quart and it is right up full so it must not be engine oil on the ground. I am leaving in a few minutes to take it in and have it looked at and I will report back.

It doesn't really take alot of oil to make a huge spot on the floor. Just a tablespoon will look like the thing bled to death, good luck with the fix though-keep us posted what to look for!

I think it's something minor. Apparently there is a breather line from the crank case into the air cleaner box and the mechanic told me when going up steep hills or sideways on hills, oil will collect in the air box. He is going to have it ready for me tomorrow but does not no quite what the fix is. Does this make sense?

pull the drain on the airbox or just remove the lid and look inside.

I would start monitoring the airbox and making sure that it is the problem. Hopefully it is and you will get lucky. You may even consider getting a siphon break for the breather line to prevent oil from coming out. I would personally suspect the seal on the front drive shaft and I would continue to monitor that area. If it is, it doesnt look to difficult to change.

This is fairly common and your assessment is 100% correct. The nut comes loose and it starts leaking oil out of the front yoke area. Usually you can tighten the nut without replacing it. The only difficult part is that you have to knock the u-joint apart and out to get to the nut.

My rhino has a rattling noise coming from that area right now when rolling. You think it could be the nut working it's way loose or bearings going out.

Loosen front diff, removed drive shaft, disassembled u-joint, removed nut on shaft and applied a little blue locktight, tighten nut back up, and re assembled everything.... so far no oil leaks.

I just fixed one yesterday. We removed the front middle driven gear assy for another reason and discovered that it had something loose inside. It rattled when moved. After disassembly, we found that the threaded bearing retainer had come loose on the inside. It had completely unthreaded itself and was just floating around inside. We cleaned and inspected the parts and reassembled it with no problems. Problem fixed.

We found the problem. I have added a second muffler on in order to quiet it down, it is not a Stealth or Benz, but a small car muffler. What is happening is it created too much back pressure and it is pumping oil from the crank case into the air box.

Oil leak started last weekend at the dunes. Same problem s2k1 described - loose nut on the yoke. Cleaned the seal and yoke and reassembled with lock tight on the nut - no more leak.

How did you remove the U joint, do you need to slide the front diff forward?
Any pointers would be great, mine is doing the same thing. :-(
